Autoeficacia en docentes de escuelas privadas de la zona metropolitana de Puerto Príncipe, Haití

Keywords: teacher self-efficacy, private schools, state subsidy

Abstract

To guarantee free schooling, the Haitian government created the Free and Compulsory Universal Schooling Program (PSUGO), assuming responsibility for subsiding private school teachers’ salaries, religious and on-denominational. However, some of the problems Haitian teachers face with that program are low salaries, lack of timely pay, lack of paid vacations, and lack hope of retirement at the end of their career.
This research sought to determine if there is a significant difference in the level of teacher self-efficacy in private schools in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, between 32 teachers affiliated with the PSUGO program and 30 who are not.
It was found that there is a significant difference in perceived self-efficacy between both groups of teachers. In addition, significant differences were observed between teachers grouped by school. However, no significant differences in self-efficacy were found between denominational and non-denominational schools.

Self-efficacy in Haitian teachers has been affected by the unfavorable conditions presented by the PSUGO program. Thinking about better education for the Haitian people implies a redesign of working conditions that directly affect teachers and indirectly affect students
