Scientific disciplines in university research on sports in Mexico: a digital hemerographic review
Abstract
Currently, sports practice has a great impact on Mexican society, which has generated a scientific-academic field that requires, given its lack of such a field, classification by scientific discipline. The purpose of this study is to describe, by discipline, the scientific and academic production in sports published at five Mexican universities, reflecting on the overall landscape of such research and the role of universities in this regard. This is an exploratory analysis of the total academic and scientific production of published articles with descriptive-quantitative and qualitative approaches in the digital proposals of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, the National School of Sports Coaches, the Benemerita Autonomous University of Puebla, and the CDEFIS University, using the Devís-Devís et al. (2010) model. A total of 328 publications were obtained. The disciplines most found are related to training theory, physical education, and sports and health, representing 50% of the total published. The discussion reflects the nature of the body of knowledge focused on these three themes, to the detriment of other disciplines, for which Mexican researchers have not extensively documented the national sports phenomenon. It also highlights the indifference of the country's leading universities to researching the subject. It is concluded that, given Mexico’s academic context, it is relevant to produce research, as there is an area of opportunity to develop in the coming years in all sciences applied to sports.
